Easter Egg Hunt & Bunny Hop

Egg Coloring, Crafts, Games, Prizes, Live Music, Face Painting, Barbecue, and a Massive Egg Hunt were all part of the festivities held at CARH’s Easter Egg Hunt and Bunny Hop on April 1st. The annual event held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds was scheduled for Saturday, but due to the rainy weather was postponed for a day. Come Sunday, sunny blue skies, lush green grass, and birds in song created a beautiful spring day for our event. A total of 300 guests, including volunteers enjoyed a fabulous fun afternoon. Upon our guests arrival they each received a colorful basket for the egg hunt. From the games to the craft and face painting table you could hear laughter ring out. The sweet tunes of guitarist Robert Briesch and friends filled the air and many of our clients joined in to sing and dance. Plenty of barbecued hot dogs, chips, popcorn and sweet treats were served for our guests enjoyment. The biggest highlight of all was the Easter Bunny and Chick making their debut to kick off the Egg Hunt. Over 600 colorful candy filled eggs were scattered throughout the park and ready for the taking. Hundreds of participants lined up along the grass line waiting for the bunny’s signal. Once the Bunny said, “GO”, everyone rushed to fill their baskets. It was a great day! Making the day even more memorable, we closed the event with a bunny walk. Winners of the fun game received a large stuffed bunny, donated by Jeanie Haigh of the Good News Bears. We would like to thank everyone who shared in this special day with those we serve living with intellectual disabilities.

April Birthdays Of The Month

Participants at Mission Hope ADP in Dublin, Jacyln Clark, Jonathan Lunt, and Thomas Post enjoyed a big birthday bash at the Michael Guidotti Center in Castro Valley on April19th. They had a wonderful time dancing to music, playing games, opening gifts and eating birthday cake with all of their friends. Participants at Golden House ADP in Alameda were ecstatic when CARH staff person, Zlata Hadzisehic arrived at their day program on April 10th to announce that they were chosen as CARH’s lucky “Birthday’s of the Month”. With gifts and balloons in hand, Zlata surprised Jason Brecel, Iyana Clardy, and Kha Nguyen with happy birthday wishes. Each “Birthday of the Month” recipient was showered with an abundance of gifts, and enjoyed delicious cake. Celebrations like these remind all of us at CARH how fortunate we are to be able to take part in the creation of wonderful memories for those we serve.

CARHs NEW Donation Center In Pinole Opened Its Doors To The Public

CARH’s NEW Donation Center in Pinole opened it’s doors to the public on Monday, April 9th. New Donation/Operation Director, Carrie Myrick, and her crew welcomed a crowd of donors who arrived in support of the new center at 9 AM. Coffee and pastries were provided to all of those who arrived with donations in hand. For 40 years, CARH has worked diligently to make donating more convenient for thousands of Bay Area residents living in Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, and San Joaquin Counties. With our growing resources of accessible and well-located donation centers and drop-off boxes, our faithful donors no longer need to wait for a scheduled pick up. Pinole was an ideal location for a new donation center. With the exception of Alameda County, Contra Costa County holds the largest number of individuals we serve living with intellectual disabilities. Within the first hour, the new center was filling up with gently used household items. The new center is located at….

CARH's St. Patrick's Day Celebrations

The rain cleared just in time for CARH’s St. Patrick’s Day Parties held on Saturday, March 17th. The Irish celebration was so popular that CARH hosted a second party to accommodate the 200 plus guests that sent RSVPs to attend. Held at the Michael Guidotti Center in Castro Valley, all of our guests arrived in the spirit of the Irish Holiday wearing many shades of green and fun attire. Some of the festivities included dancing to music provided by Live DJ, Steven Uyeda, as well as an all you can eat delicious buffet of green finger foods and desserts. A highlight at both events was Chex, a large and huggable Newfoundland therapy dog. Wearing a green bandana and pulling a cart full of gifts, Chex made his surprise debut as the DJ played the hit song by Baha Men, “Who Let the Dogs Out”. Joining him were his Newfoundland friends Tigger and Raine. Many of our guests had never seen such large dogs and rushed at the opportunity to spend time with them. The dogs were a “huge” attraction. All three therapy dogs were doted on by our clients getting lots of hugs and kisses. Everyone had a great time. We would like to thank everyone who took part in making this a fun and memorable event. We especially want to thank our volunteers who took the time to help create a rainbow of smiles and wonderful memories for those we serve living with intellectual disabilities.

What better way to spend an afternoon than being pampered? Who wouldn’t want to enjoy the luxury of getting their hair, makeup, and nails done in a relaxing atmosphere among friends?

Add a dental cleaning, top it off with some pet therapy, and you have a recipe for a perfect day, or as we call it, “A Wonderful You Day”.

Here at CARH, we enrich lives. By providing this unique service we can help build confidence and give a boost of self-esteem for those living with the challenges of having adisability.

CARH’s “A Wonderful You Day” provides the opportunity for those registered with CARH a chance to enjoy to take advantage of some of life’s simple pleasures. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Marinello Schools of Beauty students, Hazel Jacoby and her therapy dog, Chex, and every volunteer who contributed in making our clients feel and look fabulous on February 18th. The Michael Guidotti Center, located at the CARH Headquarters site, is now available for rent $250.00 per day! Built in 1995, the center continues to be used for many CARH activities such as bingo, movie matinees and dances for our clients. There are times that it is not in use and can provide an inviting and attractive space for community groups or individuals to use for committee meetings, seminars, social events, recitals and other general attendance events. The center is available for rent during the weekday and most weekends. For more information please call Mary or Corinne at 510-537-6611. Cupid paid a visit to CARH’s Annual Sweetheart Dance held on Friday, February 10th at the Ascension Greek Orthodox Church in Oakland. Over 300 of our guests attended this spectacular Valentine themed gala and enjoyed an array of entertainment. It didn’t take long for DJ, David Goulart of Unforgettable Memories, to fill up the dance floor. He played a variety of favorite hits that got everyone moving and grooving. The Art and Craft tables were quick to draw a crowd and one could hear squeals of laughter as our guests mingled with their friends as they created special Valentines for loved ones. Other attractions included a Wheel of Fortune game. When our guests weren’t tearing up the dance floor and taking part in a huge “conga line”, they enjoyed an Italian style meal which included a healthy green salad and yummy pepperoni pizza. A buffet table of cakes and treats donated by Starbucks was also a crowd pleaser. The highlight of the event was the appearance of CARH’s Visiting Cupids. Dressed as giant hearts, our Valentine mascots greeted each of our friends with a delightful furry, huggable stuffed animal generously donated by Jeanie Haigh from the non-profit organization Good News Bears. It was an amazing event that created many wonderful memories for those living with intellectual disabilities. We would like to thank the numerous volunteers who made this special event so successful. Thank You All!!

CARH’s “Top 40 Challenge” Fundraiser
As part of CARH’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, we are inviting all of Castro Valley businesses to choose us as their charity partner for 2012; to help raise funds to support our Campership program which sends individuals with intellectual disabilities to summer camp. The goal of our “Top 40 Challenge” is to raise $40,000 between February 1st and April 30th. All monies raised will go directly toward supporting our 2013 Campership Program. Some suggestions for helping us raise the money are the following; placing a collection box by a businesses cash register, coffee machine, or both, asking an employee to donate one hour ’s pay, holding a raffle, asking for corporate sponsorship, or simply writing a check. Any business or individual can help us with the “Top 40 Challenge”. At the conclusion of the campaign, all participating businesses and individuals will be invited to join us at a “Top 40 Challenge” Thank You Reception at CARH Headquarters in Castro Valley in May. Thank You!

Support Our Wish Program

Wish Program

CARH has been granting wishes to those living with intellectual disabilities since, 1987. It is through CARH’s “Wish Program” that we have been able to provide these individuals with much needed items. How does it work? Once every three months, CARH chooses an Adult Day Program for the developmentally disabled to participate. Once a day program is chosen the Program Director is contacted, and they in turn encourage each resident to make a wish. Once a wish list is compiled, the list is sent to CARH. It is always interesting when we receive a new list. We receive a wide variety of requests, some extravagant such as helicopter rides, and some surprisingly simple. Whether it is a cozy blanket, art supplies, clothing, a journal, beauty supplies, music, or a hat we do our best to grant these items.

The “Wish Program” is one way we can bring comfort, and a little happiness to those who can’t readily get what they want and need. By providing this service in Alameda, Contra Costa, and parts of Solano Counties, we can ensure that our special needs community are cherished. To date, we have granted over 10,000 wishes. Throughout December CARH celebrated our 31st Annual Jingle Bell Balls at Hilton Hotels in Concord, Newark and Oakland. For years these famed events have brought joy to hundreds of individuals living with intellectual disabilities during the Holidays. CARH is well aware that for many of our clients these events may be the only Christmas festivity they will attend. Therefore, CARH goes all out to make sure the Jingle Bell Balls are more than memorable. The events are held in the most elegant of settings and provide our guests a fabulous dining experience with spectacular entertainment, including the famous Tap Dancing Christmas Trees and Live DJ. Other highlights include a raffle, dancing, Christmas caroling, and the best for last, a personal visit from Mr. and Mrs Claus bearing gifts for all! It gives CARH great pleasure to know the difference we make in the lives of so many special individuals during the most wonderful time of year and we could not do it without the support of our community. We would like to thank all of our volunteers and donors for your generous contributions!!

CARH received the news that our longtime and beloved client passed away on December 22nd. All of us at CARH are deeply saddened by Kurt’s passing especially during the holiday season. Kurt has been an active recipient of CARH’s services and programs for many years. Kurt’s parents, Rosemarie and Lee Dix, and his aunt, Audry Schumacher, are huge CARH supporters and have been dedicated volunteers throughout the years helping at our many annual events. Despite his disabilities, Kurt always wore a smile, and brought joy to those around him. Kurt was a gentle soul who loved to have fun. Kurt never missed the opportunity to attend one of CARH’s special events. Over the years Kurt has volunteered to be a model at our Unique En Vogue Fashion Shows and rarely missed one of our Movie Mat inees. He also loved to play Bingo. He became a big part of the CARH family. We would like to extend our condolences to Kurt’s family, including Kurt’s longtime care provider, Wendi Hancock, who was always at his side. He was an inspirational man and dear friend who touched all of our lives. With a heavy heart Kurt will be missed by everyone at CARH. Remembering him will lift our spirits.

San Francisco photographer, J. John Priola wanted to add a social practice element to his photo exhibition titled “Philanthropy” at the Gallery Paule Anglim at 14 Geary Blvd. in San Francisco open from November 30^th through December 23^rd 2011. In doing so he is encouraging all of those who visit the exhibition to bring any gently used and new clothing, household items, toys, puzzles, books and other items to the gallery. A separate room has been set up to collect the donations and is monitored by a live feed camera. To watch as the donation pile grows you can visit the gallery website at www.gallerypauleanglim.com. Thank you John for your innovative way of helping us at CARH support our programs and services for our clients with intellectual disabilities. We are honored that you selected us as beneficiary of your project. We are grateful to have such a talented and passionate individual join our efforts in enriching the lives of those we serve. Since 1980, CARH’s Visiting Santa Program has been spreading holiday cheer throughout the month of December. This wonderful CARH tradition, which serves Adult Day Programs for those living with intellectual disabilities, brings joy to thousands of individuals living throughout the Bay Area. This year, CARH’s Santa along with his helpers will have once again delivered over 1500 gifts. This program like so many of our programs are instrumental in making sure that those we serve are not overlooked during the holidays. We would like to thank all of our volunteers who “suited up” to bring happiness to so many of our friends throughout the season. We would also like to thank our Santa Sew volunteers who made the wonderful gifts that were given. Having your support is the best gift of all. From all of us at CARH Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!!
