Founded in 1972,
CARH has been successful in providing services and programs that enrich the
lives of thousands of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Today, CARH continues to gain
recognition and support from those who understand the need for the unique
services that we offer and are not often available from other organizations or
government agencies. It has always
been a huge challenge to service so many of our special needs clients in Alameda,
Contra Costa and Solano Counties for over 40 years. Our success has been due primarily to the on going
generosity of our dedicated donors and volunteers who want to help us make a
difference in the lives of those we serve. This tremendous community support became more evident at
CARH’s Rummage Sale held on Saturday, April 20th. Hundreds of CARH supporters and public
patrons rolled in throughout the day to find fabulous bargains on a wide
variety of items. From house
wares, furniture, clothing, fine china, collectibles, books, toys, garden and patio
items, there was something for everyone.
We would like to thank everyone for coming to our first ever Rummage
Sale to help us raise funds for our numerous programs. By popular demand, and because the
fundraiser was so successful, we will be hosting an even bigger and better “Two
Day” Rummage Sale on June 22nd and 23rd!

Get Ready! Set! Go! Were the words that over 250 guests eagerly waited to hear as they lined up to compete in one of the largest Easter Egg Hunts held in the Bay Area. CARH’s Easter Eggstravaganza, was held on Saturday, March 23rd at the beautiful Lake Elizabeth in Fremont. Bright sunny skies made for a gorgeous day to host this fun annual event. The festivities included a BBQ, Crafts, Games, a “Crazy Easter Hat” competition, Egg Coloring, a super large Egg Hunt and of course a visit from the Easter Bunny. Everyone enjoyed the varied activities, but by far the most exciting was taking part in the Easter Egg Hunt! Over 1,300 candy filled eggs were scattered about the huge reserved picnic site and ready for the taking. Our revved up guests waited with anticipation for their “cue” to take off and start collecting as many eggs as they could. The hat contest was also a huge success. Several guests were in it to win and arrived wearing the most creative and funny hats. In fact, many of the hats were so amazing that the judges had a very tough time choosing the first, second and third prize winners. The decision was so difficult that it was decided that everyone was a winner and each of the contestants sporting their wonderful creations would receive a prize. The annual event was once again a fabulous and memorable event for all who attended. We would like to thank the many volunteers for helping to make this a fun day for our clients with intellectual disabilities.
In celebration
of the Easter Holiday, CARH’s
Visiting Easter Bunny took to the community to visit several adult day programs that serve
those living with intellectual disabilities. Our bunny was a huge success in bringing joy to hundreds of our special friends when
delivering Easter gifts and big bunny hugs.

On Saturday, March 2nd, a total of 85 guests attended CARH’s A Wonderful You Day at the Michael Guidotti Center in Castro Valley. This event has grown to be very popular among those we serve living with intellectual disabilities.
Our clients adore the special attention they get when receiving makeovers. Services include haircuts/styling, nail care, and makeup by professional artists as well as dental cleanings by dental hygienists. We would like to give a huge thank you to Marinello Schools of Beauty Instructor, Chantel Tillis, and her excellent team of students. You were all remarkable in helping those we serve with special needs. You were patient, caring and your friendly outgoing
personalities shined through. Thank you for going the extra mile to fulfill each request and for making those we serve look marvelous. We are so grateful to have Marinello Schools of Beauty as a longtime local supporter. Your school has been a huge contributor to the success of this program and our Fashion Show. We also want to thank retired Barber, Tom Munoz, for his years of dedication and service to this program. Our clients really enjoy bonding with you and know they can trust you with electric clippers. The pampering our guests receive provides a boost of self esteem creating a lot of smiles. Not only did our guests look and feel fabulous after this event, but they were provided with the tips and tools on how to look their best and to keep a healthier smile. Thank you! It was A Wonderful Day!

The Newark Pavilion was packed with 350 enthusiastic party goers on Saturday, February 17th at CARH’s Annual Sweetheart Dance! All of our guests arrived in style sporting red and pink attire to celebrate this Valentine’s Day themed party. It didn’t take long for the celebration to take off with the help of the “Hella Good Party Band” jump starting this fabulous event. In no time at all eager dancing feet were filling up the dance floor dancing to past and present “Top 10 Hits” including rock, pop and hip-hop tunes. When our guests were not dancing their “hearts” out they were enjoying delicious pizza, salad and dessert. The craft tables quickly filled up as guests were busy crafting special Valentine projects for their friends and loved ones. And when they completed their art project many of them put their mathematical knowledge to calculate how many skittle candies were packed into a large, clear cylinder. The guest coming the closest to the correct number won a huge, adorable teddy bear to take home. Other fun happenings were a couple of volunteer “Cupids” handing out gifts to all of our attendees. Of course, as is traditional at all of CARH dances, a special raffle was conducted with the winners receiving amazing Valentine stuffed toys. Just when the party was in full swing and you thought that it couldn’t get any better, the band invited some of our guests to join them on stage to sing along with them. What a fabulous day for all of our friends! We would like to thank all of our guests, volunteers and the band for making this event so memorable!!

Window of Opportunity Opens for Community Integrated Work Program
Bulletin Ready for Download http://www.carh-inc.org/forms/archives/13febnews.pdf
When Community Integrated Work Program CIWP Program Coordinator, David Modert, called inquiring about CARH’s weekday activities, he had no idea that a huge window of opportunity was about to open. Founded in 1987, CIWP, is a community-based organization that provides a wide range of support for adults living with developmental disabilities in Central and Northern California. Just a few of their services include vocational training, social/interpersonal training skills, and self advocacy. Their philosophy is based on the concepts of full integration, full inclusion, normalization, and dignity of risk.
Initially, David’s interest in CARH was to have CIWP clients participate in CARH’s weekday Movie Matinees, Bingo Days, and Animal Program for a fun and social outing, but he soon discovered that CARH had much more to offer. He had learned that CARH has partnered with local schools and the ARC of Alameda County and that we provide work for their job training programs. A window has opened. In addition to the weekday programs CIWP consumers now have the opportunity to work for CARH to enhance job skills that help gain self independence. Since CIWP clients have joined CARH, they have become instrumental in assisting us with our seasonal projects including helping make gifts for upcoming events. They were also recently the lucky recipients of CARH’s Wish Program, and are now signed up to enjoy our weekday activities. All of us at CARH are happy to be able to help support and partner with organizations in our local community who promote the well being, happiness, and independence of those we serve living with intellectual disabilities. Welcome Aboard CIWP!
PS More stuff on our facebook fan us! There are some great thank you's on there! https://www.facebook.com/CARHInc

Participants in Community Integrated Work Program (CIWP) were prevented from holding their monthly “People United” client based advocacy meetings during the winter months because of limited space in their Hayward facility. The only time that they were able to meet as a whole group was during months of good weather which allowed them to meet in local parks. But, in January this all changed when the members of “People United”, a self advocacy group for CIWP clients with intellectual disabilities, held their first meeting of the year at CARH’s Michael Guidotti Center in Castro Valley. The center was the perfect venue for their event as it allowed for plenty of space for all of CIWP’s groups to attend. In addition, the center’s theater system was perfect for everyone to watch a privately made DVD of memorable photos of the group. After People United’s Board of Directors introduced themselves, CARH’s Executive Director, Mary Gianopoulos, introduced the CARH staff and then shared a brief history of CARH, CARH’s mission and the programs and services that are offered. All of those present were eager to sign up!!
To complete this special day for the CIWP clients they were also happy participants of CARH’s Wish Program; David Modert, CIWP’s Program Coordinator worked with CARH staff person, Zlata, to help grant wishes to the over 60 guests who attended. Wish items such as watches, books, clothing, DVD’s, etc. were beautifully wrapped and presented to each one of the clients. Since 1987, CARH has been granting Wishes throughout our special needs community.
This event was very rewarding for all of us at CARH, not only did we see so many familiar faces, but there were just as many new faces who were not familiar with CARH. Many were fascinated to hear of all the benefits CARH had to offer including volunteer opportunities, grants, social activities and a large array of fun seasonal events. The event provided us at CARH with the unique opportunity to help spread the word to a large group of special
individuals who could benefit from our programs and services.
